No matter the diversity of your Mechanical Engineering background, if it's not presented effectively on the page, it won't get read. Here are some proven techniques to strengthen your resume across all major areas, and increase your response rate when submitting:
1) CORRECT FORMATTING IS KEY
A typical hiring manager spends SECONDS perusing a candidate's resume. If your document doesn't adhere to standard formatting requirements, if it's hard to read or organized poorly, it will be rejected, plain and simple.
-Utilize a logical format. That means a succinct opening, a work history listed in reverse chronological order (most recent positions first, etc.) and streamlined closing sections ("Education", "Professional Affiliations", etc.).
-Use wide margins, clean type and clear headings for every section.
-SEPARATE job responsibilities from successes within your work history. A good rule of thumb is to list responsibilities in paragraph form and successes in bullets.
-Keep boldfacing and italicizing to a minimum. While tricks like this do call attention, they do so for all the wrong reasons, and will only annoy a reader if overused.
2) QUANTIFIABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE EVERYTHING
Nothing gets a ME resume rejected faster than making general claims. Hiring agents aren't looking for generalities; they need candidates with a PROVEN TRACK RECORD of solving issues and improving operations. Highlight SUCCESSES wherever possible, especially within your work history, and always include metrics if available.
3) "OBJECTIVE" SECTIONS DON"T WORK
Beginning the resume with a 1-line "Objective" is outdated and all but meaningless in today's marketplace. Instead, opt for a 3-4 like "Summary" DEMONSTRATING key attributes. This provides a point-of-entry for readers, and builds interest in delving into your work history.
